I’m disappointed that the Puerto Rican winter league failed, but having been on the island last season, I’m not at all surprised. The league is an infrastructural nightmare. There’s no public transportation from the cities to the stadiums, and the buses that run anywhere near them shut down at 7PM (in time to get to the game, but not in time to return) and drop you off 3 miles away. Puerto Rico’s been under American influence enough that sports like basketball and football have eroded the island’s interest in baseball, and the local interest in the Caribbean series was underwhelming, except among Dominican immigrants.

Fortunately for me, I lived in the area of San Juan most densely populated by Dominicans, so I wasn’t entirely cut off from baseball mania last January.
